Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Ellesmere Muscat, we are committed to developing students who are not only academically capable but also socially responsible, empathetic, and principled. One of the most meaningful ways we support this development is through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) Community Project – a core element of the MYP and an essential stepping stone towards the Creativity, Activity (Action), Service (CAS) component of the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
Completed in Grade 9, the Community Project gives students the opportunity to actively engage with their local or global communities. It is a structured opportunity for students to apply their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills – Social, Research, Thinking, Communication, and Self-Management – to real-world situations.
At its heart, the Community Project is both a service and action initiative. Through Service Learning, students learn about the needs of a community so they can serve it meaningfully and responsibly. Through Action, students learn by doing—gaining hands-on experience and taking principled, purposeful steps to make a difference. The goal is not just to help others but to develop a deeper sense of empathy and a better understanding of one’s role within the community.
Some examples of past Community Projects include:
Hosting bake sales to raise funds for charity
Organising beach cleanups
Arranging educational workshops featuring community guest speakers
Coordinating sports days for children with physical disabilities
In the coming week, your child will begin contributing to two community initiatives. One such event will be a student-led bake sale, where proceeds will be donated to reputable charities such as the Oman Cancer Association and Al Rahma Charity. We encourage you to support this initiative by speaking with your child about how you can contribute. Even a small donation can go a long way toward making these efforts successful.
The MYP Community Project is more than just a school assignment—it is a chance for students to grow as compassionate leaders and reflective learners. With your continued support, we are confident that our students will rise to the challenge and make a meaningful impact.
Best regards,
Ibrahim Abd Rahman
