Dear Secondary parents and guardians,

On Wednesday the 19th and 20th of February, we engaged in a two-day-long STEM initiative involving all Secondary students and teachers. The purpose of this interdisciplinary venture was to explore sustainability through Science, Technology, Engineering & Math. The goal of STEM Day was to imagine, then construct a more sustainable community garden for our school community to enjoy. Students viewed the challenged through all subject areas. They worked alongside students from multiple classes and grade levels. Our Upper-Year students acted as mentors to their MYP peers, exhibiting traits of leadership and modelling collaboration.

In order to give you a glimpse into the initiative, I have included some of the details!

Key Areas of Investigation:

  • Sustainable Food Production – Testing chicken & duck feed for optimal nutrition
  • Hydroponics & Water Conservation – Designing an efficient plant-growing system
  • Renewable Energy & Eco-Design – Exploring solar power & sustainable material
  • Wildlife & Biodiversity – Creating habitats to support local ecosystem
  • Soil Science & Composting – Enhancing soil health for better plant growth

Interdisciplinary Teams:

  • Science Team – Conducting experiments on soil, water, and food quality
  • Design & Technology Team – Engineering hydroponic systems & garden structures
  • Economics Team – Planning a sustainable financial model for the garden
  • English Team – Writing persuasive articles & community outreach materials
  • Islamic Studies Team – Applying environmental stewardship principles
  • I&S Team – Adapting space-based sustainability solutions for Earth
  • Arabic Team – Highlighting Arabic agricultural traditions & translations

The event was a pure success, engaging all participants and giving students the opportunity to further develop their interpersonal skills, research skills, creative thinking and self-management skills among others, while actively addressing some of our most pressing ecological challenges.

Congratulations to our Secondary Science team for a job well done! Have a safe and enjoyable weekend ahead.

Best regards,

Mr. Ibrahim Abd Rahman

Secondary Team Leader
