Last week we were treated to grade 9’s smoothie fair as part of Design in the MYP. This week, I had the pleasure of visiting our KG classroom, where our youngest learners were busy being engineers — applying their own version of the Design Cycle in the most imaginative way.
The challenge? They had a problem to solve: how to travel to a destination of their choice. After identifying their goal, students brainstormed and planned different modes of transport — from helicopters and cars to planes; there was even a lamborghini!
Each child carefully designed their vehicle, drawing plans and thinking about what materials they would need. Today, the excitement was contagious as parents and teachers joined the classroom to help bring these wonderful ideas to life. Using cardboard, tape, recycled materials, and lots of creativity, the children built their chosen mode of transport with determination and pride. I secretly think the teachers and parents might have had just as much fun as the students!
Through this playful and authentic experience, our Kindergarten students explored the key stages of the design process:
Identifying the problem
Planning and drawing solutions
Collaborating with others
Creating a working prototype
It was a brilliant reminder that Design thinking starts early — and that with a bit of imagination, even the youngest learners can solve big problems.
Well done to our young engineers and a big thank you to the parents and staff who helped make their ideas fly!
