As we finish another exciting week at our school, I wanted to update you with one particular initiative that is shaping Ellesmere Muscat.

Concept-Based Inquiry Approach to planing, teaching and learning

This week, I had the pleasure of leading several planning meetings focused on the concept-based inquiry approach. This planning method encourages teachers to engage deeply with concepts by exploring big ideas, conceptual understandings and guiding questions, thereby planning with more intent and rigor for the students. Concept-Based Inquiry shifts our thinking from a 2 Dimensional approach where we only focus on skills and knowledge to a 3 Dimensional approach which includes conceptual understandings and dispositions or ATL’s as they are called in the IB.  I am excited about the innovative ideas our educators are bringing to the table and look forward to seeing these conceptual understandings come to life in our classrooms.

Focusing on concepts rather than rote memorization of facts fosters critical thinking and creativity, allowing students to engage deeply with the material. It encourages them to ask questions, explore connections across different subjects, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. This not only enhances their understanding but also cultivates a love for learning, as students see the relevance of their studies in their everyday lives. It also means that the heavy-lifting in terms of learning is the responsibility of the student, not the teacher. Ultimately, concept-based inquiry prepares our children to navigate complex challenges in an ever-changing world, equipping them with the skills they need for future success.

Wishing you a great weekend,

Ms. Michelle
