Biology Teacher Role Description (IBDP)
Ellesmere Muscat, an esteemed International Baccalaureate (IB) World School nestled in the vibrant city of Muscat, Oman, invites applications for the position of IB Diploma Biology Teacher. This role is designed for a dedicated educator who is passionate about science and eager to inspire and prepare upper secondary students for their future academic and career paths within the framework of the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum Delivery: Teach Biology at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) within the IB DP, developing and delivering engaging, rigorous lesson plans that foster critical thinking, inquiry, and a deep understanding of biological concepts. Additionally, teach in the MYP programme as requested.
- Assessment and Feedback: Utilize a variety of assessment strategies to monitor student progress, providing timely and constructive feedback to support student learning and success in internal assessments (IAs) and final IB examinations.
- Laboratory Management: Oversee the preparation and execution of practical laboratory sessions, ensuring that students safely and effectively use scientific equipment to conduct experiments that enhance their understanding of the curriculum.
- Educational Technology: Integrate technology into teaching and learning processes to enrich the biology curriculum, making use of digital resources and platforms to facilitate interactive learning experiences.
- Professional Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the science department and interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative teaching strategies and cross-curricular links. Participate in departmental meetings, professional development activities, and contribute to curriculum planning and review.
- Student Guidance: Act as a mentor and advisor to students, guiding them in their Internal Assessments, Extended Essays in Biology, and providing support and advice for their overall IB Diploma journey, including university application processes where relevant.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Promote an understanding and appreciation of Oman’s cultural heritage and the diversity of the school community within the classroom, fostering an environment of mutual respect and global-mindedness.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related field, with a teaching qualification.
- Proven experience teaching Biology at the secondary level, with a strong preference for candidates with IB Diploma Programme teaching experience.
- Deep understanding of the IB DP curriculum, assessment criteria, and examination formats.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, to effectively convey complex scientific concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and challenge students through innovative and differentiated instructional methods.
- Commitment to professional growth and development within the IB educator network.
- Ability to work effectively within a team, contributing to a positive and supportive teaching and learning environment.
